I am not a fan of the portrait shots as we can all take them it just comes down to how much you want to spend on your equipment. Unfortunately someone who uses say a 500/600 f4 and a pro camera should always get a better portrait shot than someone with a less expensive consumer set up. In my opinion the best shots are those one off moments, an action scene or something unusual, this is where field craft and skill really show through.Jeremy Dexterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14403022199256084364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1541518474469179064.post-41176058749726500792021-03-10T02:44:14.696-08:002021-03-10T02:44:14.696-08:00Thanks Jeremy. Most folk are well aware of the practices used by the BG judge(s) and how some photos are favoured. It seems the equipment being used is often a big clincher (the recent Gt Bustard photos offer a good case in point). I don't expect to win, and my comments about BG are very much tongue in cheek, but it's very noticeable in recent years how my success has tailed off despite my photos being better than ever before. Maybe everybody else has overtaken me. For the large part I don't bother posting photos there any more but just use them for my blog.Old Caleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06145255810084342235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1541518474469179064.post-67790447545979501702021-03-06T00:38:45.360-08:002021-03-06T00:38:45.360-08:00Hi Nick

Use a fixed size (3x2 or 4x3) rather than a letterbox and allow more room above the head. The rule of thirds Is useful and any asymmetry will enhance the image. You are squeezing too much bird into too little space. Hope that helpsJeremy Dexterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14403022199256084364noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1541518474469179064.post-14230681697525186032021-03-05T04:35:54.646-08:002021-03-05T04:35:54.646-08:00Cool read as usual, Great pics :-)
